Citizens' group does survey on pedestrian rights

Last Updated 11 August 2017, 19:55 IST

Citizens for Bengaluru (CfB) is conducting a survey for pedestrian rights, especially along the Namma Metro line.

The survey ‘Walk in my Shoes’ aims to assess the problems faced by pedestrians like safety, last-mile connectivity to Metro stations and pedestrian infrastructure.

CfB member Srinivas Alavilli said, “Walkability is a very important part of public transport. Every person who uses public transport is a walker who walks from home to Metro stations and to bus stops. From this survey, we are trying to identify issues faced by pedestrians.”
CfB volunteers will pose 15 questions to pedestrians like how they reach the Metro station and bus stops, if they are aware of Metro feeder services, do they feel safe while crossing the road or walking and if bus services have been integrated with the Metro.

CfB volunteers have been visiting various locations to understand the issues faced by pedestrians. The survey was conducted near Metro stations and junctions near Metro stations. Earlier, CfB volunteers carried out a survey near KR Puram and Baiyappanahalli. On Thursday, CfB visited South End in Jayanagar to do a field study. “Senior citizens find it very difficult to walk and lack of integration between Metro and bus is also felt,” says Alavilli.

CfB has started an online campaign with a hashtag #MakeBengaluruWalkable. CfB is also planning to conduct a survey near major Metro stations and junctions, which have recorded the highest number of accidents. The findings will be shared with suggestions and an action plan to civic agencies.
