Congress sniffs government hand in Priyanka reports

Last Updated 14 August 2017, 10:30 IST
Congress on Monday sensed a government hand in reports about Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra being made the Working President' of the party.

“These are government planted fabrications and distractions that require no comment from the Congress. I dismiss this,” senior Congress spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters here.

A newspaper had reported that Congress President Sonia Gandhi had broached the topic of leadership change in the party after a meeting of the Congress Working Committee last week.

It said that senior leaders, including former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had suggested making Priyanka the Working President of the Congress.

Rejecting the report, Sharma said it was an attempt to distract attention from the “non-performance” of the Modi government. “They do not want to discuss the rise in terror attacks, lack of jobs, the state of the economy and the death of kids in a Gorakhpur hospital,” he said.

Priyanka's office also termed the report as “complete fabrication”. “No such discussion took place whatsoever,” Priyanka's aide Preeti Sahai said.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala also dubbed the report as “entirely false and baseless”.

“It is a mischievous instance of fake news and unnecessary speculation,” Surjewala said.
