Last Updated 17 August 2017, 16:44 IST

Top Opposition leaders from Rahul Gandhi to Sitaram Yechury on Thursday lent their weight to Sharad Yadav in his fight against JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar who has sided with BJP to form a government in Bihar.

The 'Save Composite Culture Conference' was a show of strength by Opposition and witnessed the attendance of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, National Conference's Farooq Abdullah, Samajwadi Party's Ramgopal Yadav, CPI's D Raja, JD(S)' Danish Ali, RJD's Manoj Jha and RLD's Jayanth Chaudhary among others.

The RSS-BJP was the target of opposition leaders with many of the speakers questioning the claims of the Narendra Modi government at the meeting, which was organised by Yadav defying party orders.

Addressing the meeting, Congress Vice President Gandhi launched an attack on the RSS-BJP saying the Modi government did not keep the promise of bringing back black money and offering jobs to youth and they were helping corporates but not farmers.

He said with its ideology RSS-BJP cannot win the elections and they were now trying to have their own people in media, bureaucracy and judiciary among other areas.

"Modi is talking about Swachch (clean) Bharat, what we want is Sach (honest) Bharat. We do not want your 'jhoota' (dishonest) Bharat. Wherever he goes, he lies," he said as he called for a joint fight to preserve common heritage.

CPI(M) General Secretary Yechury warned against the creation of "Hindu Pakistan" in India, saying there is a concerted effort to create disturbances in the country.

Citing filmmaker Manmohan Desai's remarks on his hit films that his aim was never to allow the viewer a chance to think, Yechury said, "Modi also is doing the same. Every day he is coming up with a new slogan. But the question is what happened to the older slogans."

Referring to Kumar breaking the Grand Alliance and Yadav's rebellion, Congress' Ghulam Nabi Azad said, faction led by Yadav is the "real" and secular JD-U while the group led by the Bihar Chief Minister is "completely drowned in the BJP".

In his address, Yadav did not mince words about his stand and referred to the vote by Gujarat MLA Chottubhai Vasava in favour of Congress' Ahmed Patel despite directions from Kumar to vote for BJP candidate. Vasava's vote tilted the election in favour of Patel.

"Some people were thinking that I would slip away and become a yes-man. But that is not going to happen," he said.
