A final year engineering student fought back her kidnappers and successfully escaped a kidnap bid on Gundlupet road in Nanjangud town, on Wednesday.

The girl had been lured by a man who had repeatedly called her posing as her uncle. Ramya, daughter of Puttaiah, a native of Santhekasalagere in Mandya taluk, is a student of the Government Engineering College in Chamarajanagar. Puttaiah’s younger brother Sathish was a KSRTC driver in Turuvekere, in Tumakuru district. The man had been calling Ramya for the past one month claiming to be Sathish. As his voice resembled that of her uncle, she trusted the caller.

On Tuesday too, the caller told Ramya that he will be in Nanjangud for some work and would be free for some time and expressed his desire to meet her in Nanjangud town. Ramya then travelled from Chamarajanagar to Nanjangud on Wednesday.

While Ramya was waiting on the Bypass Road near Srikanteshwara temple, he called her and told her that his friends would pick her up.

Within minutes, a woman, around 28-years-old, approached her and escorted her into a car.

The car started moving towards Gundlupet via MG Road. The woman however, alighted midway on the pretext of buying some sweets. After that, the driver of the car tried to speed away. Ramya, who grew suspicious, protested and when the driver locked the doors of the car and threatened to kill her if she tried to act smart, Ramya turned the steering wheel resulting in an accident. The driver then abandoned the car and fled the spot. Police are trying to trace the accused based on the phone call records.
