This historic place cries for attention

Last Updated 08 September 2017, 19:20 IST

Even though the government has been pitching for the protection of historic sites, many places of historical importance are in ruins in Udupi district.

One can find the remains of such monuments from the era of Vijayanagara and Keladi rulers in Barkur. There are forts, temples and hero stones spread across the region, that call for attention.

Barkur had once been the capital of Tulunadu kingdom and was recognised as the symbol of the rich culture of the region. It was also a prominent religious destination. The history of Tulunadu has a special chapter on Barkur. The Alupa rulers too had made Barkur as their capital. As a commercial centre, Barkur gained importance during the colonial period and the British had established a port here.

The historical references speak about 365 temples, which once were popular among spiritual enthusiasts. Basadis and stone inscriptions are found to this day but in ruins. Many of the hero stones and other stone slab inscriptions have been decamped by people, to be used for the construction of houses and so on. Today, many of these remains have been facing the harsh weather conditions.

Ganapathy Temple in Chowlikere, Somanatheshwara Temple in Manigara Keri, Panchalingeshwara Temple in Kotekeri are being restored by Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage while the other places such as the Kattale Basadi, lakes, stone inscriptions which have been standing as the mute spectators of a bygone era of cultural legacy, are in a pitiable condition.

The Archaeological Survey of India had recognised the monuments of National Importance in the region. But, nothing is being done towards protecting the monuments.
