The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Friday started the process of translocating 112 trees on Jayamahal Road to widen the road.

About seven trees were translocated on the first day. The trees have been translocated to the palace premises. “The trees on Jayamahal Road will now be shifted to the palace compound adjacent to the road,” said a senior BBMP officer.

Six of the seven trees, that were translocated, belonged to Badami family while the tree is from cherry family.“If the translocation of seven trees is successful, then we will implement the same method of translocation to the remaining trees,” he said.

The BBMP is also planting two saplings for each tree which is being translocated.

With the help of a retired deputy conservator of forests, BBMP, the process is carried out using a JCB. “The place near the tree will be first dug and then the crane will pull the tree. The most vital part of the translocation process is pulling out the tree without damaging the roots. The tree will then be translocated to the place identified for the same,”said BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad.

“It might take another month to finish the entire stretch of 112 trees,” said a senior officer. Bengaluru Development Minister KJ George has appreciated our effort to carryout road widening without felling trees, said Prasad.

George along with Mayor G Padmavathi and BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad inspected the translocation process on Friday.
