BBMP to give facelift to 227 burial grounds in phases

As many as 227 burial grounds in the city will get a facelift from Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). In the first phase, 35 burial grounds in all eight zones will be developed.

The local body woke up to the pathetic condition of the burial grounds in the city after Mayor G Padmavathi and chairman of Standing Committee of taxation and Finance, M K Gunashekar,  noticed lack of facilities at several burial grounds during their visit, this January.

 “The Palike has sanctioned Rs 50 crores to uplift the burial grounds. We will be clearing the weed, make pathways, sink borewells, instal lights and also provide shelter for diggers and the security guards,” said K T Nagaraj, chief engineer, Projects, who is in charge of this project.

“The detailed project report has been prepared for the remaining burial grounds. We will take up the works after the completion of the first phase,” said Nagaraj.

The local body has entrusted the task of maintaining the burial grounds to Horticulture department. It has released Rs 25 crore for the same. This apart, Rs 7 crore has been released for the development of electric crematorium in Chamarajpet. "We will also develop the crematoriums in Banashankari and Kalpalli,” said M K Gunashekar, president of standing committee.
