ASJ Alliance defeats ABVP in UoH student union elections

The Dalit-Muslim –Adivasi alliance has swept the students’ union elections at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) here trouncing their arch rival Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)-OBC Front.

The university has witnessed massive protests in January last year following the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohit Vemula.

The Alliance for Social Justice (ASJ), comprising Students Federation of India (SFI), Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA), Dalit Students’ Union (DSU), Muslim Students’ Federation (MSF) and few other like-minded groups, has won all the posts. In all, three Dalits, two Muslims and one Adivasi candidate emerged victoriously.

The anti right-wing wave prevailed in the campus following a prolonged agitation on the campus demanding justice for Rohit Vemula. The research scholar committed suicide in hostel room due to the alleged harassment by the university authorities.

Arif Ahammed from SFI is the new general secretary after defeating his nearest rival Kiran Kumar of the ABVP by a margin of 409 votes. Muhammed Ashique of the Muslim Students’ Federation won the post of joint secretary by defeating ABVP candidate Rani by a margin of 281.Representatives of Dalit Students Union won the posts of cultural and sports secretary by defeating the ABVP candidates.

For the post of vice-president, Lunavath Naresh from the Tribal Students’ Forum defeated ABVP candidate Apoorva by a margin of 261 votes. However, the results for this post were withheld by the election grievance committee on technical grounds.

Sreerag Poickadan of Ambedkar Students Union has been elected as the new president. He defeated his nearest rival Karan Palsania of the ABVP by a margin of 170 votes.
