Inheritance of a craft

Last Updated 24 September 2017, 18:29 IST
Despite having been brought up in an atmosphere steeped in art, Neha Nagpal wasn’t very serious about her stint in this field, until recently.

“Art was always a hobby while growing up. Being artistic is something that I have inherited from my mother. She was an amazing artist and exposed me to different types and forms of art right from childhood. After losing her, I was at a crossroads. I just wanted to have something to pour my heart into and that is how it all started.”

Now her passion has taken a definite shape, as can be seen from the myriad of images that liven up her Facebook page ‘Kolour Theory’. From vividly painted old-world telephones to colourful keepsake boxes and decorated candles, her creations are a treat for the eyes.

She works with glass and acrylic paints to create home decor products. Upcycling is a constant theme in her works and she also creates a lot of decoupage products. The Buddha motif is a recurring one in her works.

Asked about her favourite creations, she says, “I try and do something new and unusual. Recently I have been giving these vintage phones a makeover - I have not seen anything of that sort till now. But it’s very difficult to source these phones. I have been getting them from Mumbai and Gujarat. Not many people have it but that is why they love it all the more.”

She mentions she started her foray into the artistic world by gifting her creations to friends and family. Over the years, they encouraged her to take it more seriously and focus on it.

“People always appreciate my creations. The ones who know more about art are able to fully appreciate the time and effort that goes into it. Not everybody understands it,” she says. Time is a challenge for this talented crafter.

“It gets a bit difficult because I am alone in this. From sourcing the supplies and raw materials to making it, it is a time consuming process.”

But Neha has no plans to stop and wants to take more leaves out of her mother‘s book. “She was a brilliant artist. My style is different but I keep trying to better myself and get closer to her level. She used to make huge ceramic oil paintings. That is something that I want to do in future,” she says.
