Mulayam rules out forming new party, sulking Shivpal boycotts press meet

Last Updated 25 September 2017, 14:02 IST
Contrary to the expectations, Samajwadi Party (SP) patron Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday refused to desert his son and SP supremo Akhilesh Yadav despite terming him a ''dhokhebaz'', a decision that left the former's younger brother Shivpal Singh Yadav fuming.

''Akhilesh has betrayed me.....he had said that he would hand over the party's reins to me after assembly polls but did not fulfill his promise,'' Mulayam told reporters here.

''A senior BJP leader (Modi) had said that a person, who was not true to his father, can not be loyal to the people,'' the SP patron said but made it clear that he was not going to form a separate outfit.

He said that there was no question of leaving the SP. ''I am against Akhilesh but not against SP....Akhilesh has already left the party,'' he added.

Akhilesh, immediately after the press conference, tweeted ''Netaji (Mulayam) zindabad''.

According to the sources within the SP, Mulayam was to have announced his decision to leave the SP and head Lok Dal, whose current chief Sunil Singh had also arrived in the state capital to take part in the press conference.

The press note prepared by Shivpal, which was to be read by Mulayam, mentioned that Mulayam had been humiliated by Akhilesh on several occasions and hence he had decided to form a new outfit.

Mulayam, however, refused to read Shivpal's press note prompting him and Sunil Singh to boycott the press conference, sources said.

Akhilesh and Shivpal had fallen out a few months before the assembly polls in the state and the former, then the chief minister, had sacked the latter from the ministry. In the subsequent days the SP infighting intensified further and Akhilesh, at a hurriedly convened National Convention of the SP, also ousted Mulayam from the post of national president and anointed himself as the national president.
