Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has launched a research project on “Premature coronary artery disease — heart attacks in the young”.

The institute has also signed an MoU with Centre of Human Genetics, Bengaluru and St John’s Research Institute on Tuesday.

Dr C N Manjunath, director of Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, said 25% of patients with heart attacks whom the institute treats are below the age of 40 years. He said this trend has been steadily increasing over the past two years. “We saw at least 700 young patients below the age of 40 in the last five months. While analysing the reasons for this, we found that 50% were smokers, 20% had family history of heart attack, another 20% were alcoholics but many did not have any history of heart ailments or other habits,” he said.

“We are launching this research to look at these patients, to investigate genetic mutation.”
