Superintendents of Police (SPs) of all the districts have been directed to take steps to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants and initiate action against them, Home Minister R Ramalinga Reddy informed the Legislative Assembly  on Wednesday.

The issue, which was raised during Question Hour, witnessed members state that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh had even obtained Aadhaar cards and were availing of public distribution system (PDS) facilities. Some of them had even enrolled themselves in the voters' list.

D N Jeevaraj (BJP) said several illegal immigrants from Bangladesh were working as labourers in coffee estates in Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga and Kodagu. "There are ready to work for long hours and cheap wages and hence estate owners do not mind recruiting them. These immigrants claim that they are from Assam, but they are actually from Bangladesh," he said.

Jeevaraj said the immigrants posed a threat to internal security of the state. M Satish Reddy (BJP) said scores of Bangladeshi immigrants worked as construction labourers in Bengaluru.

Ramalinga Reddy said he will immediately direct SPs to identify such illegal immigrants.
