A biodegradable waste management unit has been installed at Udupi Krishna Mutt. The unit has been set up at a cost of Rs 13 lakh and is sponsored by Rural Development project under the aegis of Art of Living Ravishankar Guru.

The Krishna Mutt daily offers meals for thousands of devotees. As a result, a large quantity of bio waste is created. The waste will be processed in a machine by applying a solution and will be kept for 10 days. After 10 days, the waste will be converted into organic manure.

Manure for farmers

There are plans to distribute manure to farmers at a nominal rate. The rate would be fixed in such a way as to maintain the machinery. It will not be sold for commercial purposes. The availability of plantain leaves, vegetable waste, flowers and other degradable products is helpful in the preparation of manure.

Pejawar seer Vishwesha Theertha Swami inaugurated the unit.

Support to drive

He said that the unit has been installed as per the aspiration of Swacha Bharath initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Even the district administration has taken up initiatives to make Udupi a garbage-free district. By installing the unit at the Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt, the mutt has also extended its support to the cleanliness drive.

Pejawar junior pontiff Vishwaprasanna Swami, unit engineer Vasishta Mayank and others were present.
