The police took custody of a dog in Badayun after it was claimed by two people.

The dog was bought by a resident of Maharajganj locality a few months ago from nearby Bareilly.

It disappeared a few days ago and was spotted on the terrace of the neighbour's house on Thursday.

The pet dashed towards the owner after he whistled. An altercation broke out when the neighbour also claimed it to be his pet.

As the situation threatened to turn violent, people informed the police, who took the dog into custody.

"We will try to find out who owns the dog.....once we establish who the owner is, the dog will be handed over...till then it will be in our custody," a police officer said.

The police have a tough task as the dog is of foreign origin and requires a special diet.

"We will seek help from other dog owners," the official said.

Recently, a senior jail official in Jalaun district had put donkeys in prison after they destroyed standing crops in the field outside the jail.

The donkeys were released after the owner agreed to compensate for the loss.
