Director of the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) D G Rao said that the studies and research in linguistics is lagging behind as there are no dedicated departments in the universities in the state.

Speaking to media here on Saturday Rao said that Linguistics departments are present only in the University of Mysore and the Karnataka University in Dharwad.

"However, in Dharwad, there are no trained faculty. So, when we invite research papers on subjects in Linguistics, the response from research scholars in Kannada and Karnataka is poor," he said.

Translation hub

He said that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development is keen on establishing a translation hub in Mysuru. "The CIIL has already submitted a detailed project report in this connection. If the hub becomes functional, at least 80 translators of all languages would get work. However, there are no qualified translators in Mysuru. The National Testing Service-India, under the CIIL, is conducting three-week courses to train translators," he said.
