Last Updated 06 January 2018, 19:41 IST

A court here passed 111 orders on the first day of the New Year, breaking all stereotypes of Indian judicial delays.

The orders, all of them pertaining to  bail matters,  were passed by Gopal, the 71st Additional City Civil and Additional Sessions Court judge. The court (Civil Court Hall 72) also looks into  crimes against women.

The judge took charge of this court on November 23, 2017, and found that 255 applications pertaining to bail and anticipatory bail were pending. He posted 111 matters for orders on January 1, 2018. Many lawyers were surprised  since these matters had been pending since 2015.

"We knew judge Gopal had disposed of many cases when he was posted to a family court in Belagavi.

Prayers in that court pertained to alimony,"  a lawyer said. Bail applications in CCH 72 were heard for 10 consecutive days in December 2017 and disposed of on a single day.

Application pending

According to the court staff, 140 such applications are pending before the same court.

A senior public prosecutor said judge Gopal had an incredible performance as the Lokayukta special court judge.

"The conviction rate was almost 70% when he was posted to the Lokayukta court. He was also the Lokayukta court judge in Mysuru.  With the adjudication of bail applications, the trial in main cases can be held on a regular basis,"  he added.
