The third additional district sessions court, on Monday, sentenced Ramesh to seven years in jail and slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 for raping a schoolgirl.

If the convict fails to pay the fine, the court has ordered him to serve two additional years in jail.

Ramesh had also threatened the rape victim with dire consequences if she reported him to the police.

Background of the crime

Police said that the convict, Ramesh, who is the victim's relative, had taken her to Doddaballapur on March 18, 2017 and raped her there.

He had threatened her that he would upload her pictures on to Whatsapp.

The terrified victim revealed the details of the incident to her parents much later.

Her mother lodged a complaint with the city police then and they booked a case under the POCSO Act.

The womens' police station sub-inspector Paravatamma investigated the case and charge-sheeted Ramesh in June 2017.

After arguments, the third additional district sessions judge P T Kattimani sentenced the convict Ramesh.

Special prosecutor Gayathri Devi argued on behalf of the State.
