MCC gets Rs 593 cr for water, UGD works

A sum of Rs 218.50 crore and Rs 195 crore will be utilised towards improving water supply and underground drainage system. The works will be conducted with assistance from ADB, Government grant and MCC funds. This apart, a fund of Rs 179.52 will be used for the above mentioned works.

Chairing a meeting meant for general public and MCC members on ADB assisted Jalasiri and UGD works at Mangala Auditorium in Mangaluru City Corporation on Thursday, Mayor Kavita Sanil said that the share for water supply, the government grant, ADB loan and urban local body will be 40%, 50% and 10% respectively. For the UGD works, the allocation of government grant, ADB loan and ULB share will be 50%, 40% and 10% respectively. Similarly, under Amrut project, the funds will be allocated in a 50:20:30 ratio. Technical consultant for MCC - GKW Consultants (Kolkata) Representative Jayaprakash said that funds have been earmarked for replacing old sewerage pumping main for Mangaluru, rejuvenation of sewer system and missing link works in Mangaluru, rehabilitation and reconstruction of sewerage system at Old Mangalore city, rehabilitation and reconstruction of sewerage system for zone 7 - laterals in Mangaluru, sewerage system for uncovered areas - Zone 9, 12 and 13, rehabilitation and reconstruction of trunk sewer in zone 3 and 5 of Mangalore old city.

The works include: 11.40 kms DI K9 sewer pumping main and allied works, missing link sewer line, repair of laterite manholes along with road works, construction of wet wells. He added that the work will start after the rainy season. Social activist Hanumantha Kamath said that the MCC has not consulted the general public on the requirements before taking up the work. DYFI leaders said that the sewage from drainage is flowing in open drains and is joining Phalguni river which should be stopped.
