Polka dots continue to rule the fashion scene, and designers say there's a good reason for it.

There is hardly anyone who hasn't had polka dots in the wardrobe as a child, says designer Parul J Maurya.

"If carefully chosen, the print can be classy and demure and can be worn on formal occasions too," she says.

Get it right

Parul's advice is to be minimal when it comes to accessories and hairstyle, but to be dramatic with eye makeup. That way, the dots stand out.

"Team the dots with a suede pair of heels and a studded designer bag to elevate the look. Make sure to avoid accessories with heavy prints or patterns while wearing polka dots “this is one print which does not like to share the limelight," she says.

Be it on clothes, shoes or accessories like spectacle frames, hats or scarves, this spotty trend is all set to make you get a feel of the 60s vibe. Though the silhouettes of this print have changed over the years, polka dot itself has never gone out of fashion.

Parul says, "This year's runways have seen the dots more redolent than ever of old-school femininity. Pantsuits, short dresses, gowns, kaftans, men's shirts and accessories, everything sported polka dots, so it is a big trend of the season."

It's the fun element in the dots that make many pick it up. Nishit Gupta, the director of 'KALKI' says, this year, it is going to be all about bolder and larger polka dots

"Monotones like black and white, yellow and blue or a play of contrasting colours are a few ways one can make it trendy and impactful," he says.

Polka dots also favours Indian outfits and can be played around on 'lehengas' and saris.

These dots have not left men behind either.

"Men are much confident these days and can carry fabrics and prints meant for women unlike earlier when there was a clear demarcation between fabrics for men and women. This experimenting attitude is making them try dots too," says Nishit.

Some of the trending polka dotted attires

"Whether it is bikini, gown, sari, skirt or top, you name it and the polka dots are there. This is the kind of presence it has. One can pair polka dots with polka dots. For instance, you can wear a large polka-dotted skirt with a small polka-dotted top. It all depends on how confidently you can carry it off," says Nishit.
