Recipient of Padma Shri eminent cardiologist Dr B K Goyal passes away

Eminent cardiologist Dr B K Goyal passed away in Mumbai on Tuesday. He was 82.

He is survived by son Rahul Goyal, and three daughters Sandhya Mittersain, Alka Jhunjhunwala and Varsha Sethi. Dr Goyal was the Honorary Dean and Chief Cardiologist at the Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences and is a former Director-Professor of cardiology of JJ Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Mumbai.

A recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and the Padma Vibhushan, he had penned a book titled Heart Talk.  He also has more than 50 publications in recognized national and international journals. Dr  Goyal is the only cardiologist outside the United States to have the unique distinction of being appointed as the Honorary Consultant Cardiologist to the world famous Texas Heart Institute, Houston.

He was a consultant cardiologist to the Armed Forces of India, a visiting Professor of Cardiology at the University of Alabama in U.S. and visiting cardiologist to the Oshner Heart Institute, New Orleans.

The Maharashtra government honoured him by appointing him as the Professor Emeritus of Cardiology for life. He was the member of executive council of the University of Bombay and presently is the Member of the senate of Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS).

He has served as a member of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare and National Council for blood transfusion. He was also the Sheriff of Mumbai for a year.
