Relieved after SC verdict, says Priya Varrier

Actor Priya Varrier said on Wednesday that she felt "relieved" and "extremely happy" after the Supreme Court stayed all criminal proceedings in connection with 'Manikyamalaraya poovi', the hugely popular song from her upcoming movie Oru Adaar Love.

Priya's wink in the song, released on YouTube as part of the film's promotion, has turned her into an internet sensation across India and beyond.

Priya and makers of the film have countered cases filed for allegedly offending religious sentiments – the song traces the story of Prophet Muhammad and his first wife Khadijah – by stating they were only recreating a song popular for about four decades. "I hope something positive comes out of this verdict, for all film-makers," she told reporters. Priya said she was initially left unsettled by the controversy but has since coped with it.

The film's director, Omar Lulu, thanked his supporters in the wake of the apex court's verdict. The song, penned by P M A Jabbar about 40 years ago, has been a popular track in the Malabar region. The new version is composed by Shaan Rahman and sung by popular actor-filmmaker Vineet Sreenivasan. On YouTube, the video of the song has crossed a whopping 37 million views.
