On wedding-eve, groom qualifies as cop, demands dowry hike

A groom in Bihar called off his marriage at the last moment, just because he got selected as a Bihar constable on the eve of wedding. The success apparently went into his head and he asked for a hiked dowry.

"Hike the dowry amount from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 10 lakh," the groom reportedly informed the bride's family. Since the bride's kin could not arrange the requisite amount at the last moment, neither the baraat arrived, nor the groom.

The incident took place at Kahuara village in Nawada district earlier this week.

"The bride's house was all decked up. So was the bride as well as other guests. Suddenly we were informed that the groom has refused to go ahead with the wedding. Reason, he had qualified in the recently published result for Bihar Police. So he demanded that the dowry amount be hiked to Rs 10 lakh," a family member was quoted in a vernacular daily with a request not to publish the name of the family.

The family source said that in the 'original deal', it was decided that the groom be handed over Rs 4 lakh as cash and jewellery worth Rs 3 lakh. "We had already given Rs 4 lakh as cash. The jewellery was purchased by us, but it was supposed to be handed over to the groom side during wedding rituals," the family member said.

With the hiked dowry demand not met at the last moment, neither the baraat arrived. Nor the groom.

The bride has now sought help of the local police to salvage her pride. On Tuesday, she went to Nardiganj police station in Nawada. Citing jurisdiction problem, the cops, however, sent her to Atari police station. The police there gave her a patient hearing but have so far refrained from taking any action on the plea that "the matter should be sorted out with the help of village elders and family members from both sides."
