Students from MU score hat-trick of wins at national youth fest

Students from SDM College, Ujire and Govindadasa College, Suratkal, representing Mangalore University, scored a hat-trick of wins by bagging three first prizes in one-act play, folk dance and satirical play in the 33rd national-level youth festival held in Ranchi, Chhattisgarh from February 16 to 20.

Addressing reporters here on Friday, Mangalore University Student Welfare Directorate Director Dr B Uday Barkur said that such an achievement has set a record in the history of the university. The teams qualified at the national-level after taking part in the South Zonal level Youth festival held in Kanchipuram from December 18 to 22.

As many as 15 students from SDM College and 25 students from Govindadasa College took part in the prize winning events.

The first prize winning performances were 'Maarikadu', a one-act play by Dr Chandrashekhar Kambar, and a translated version of William Shakespeare's 'Macbeth', the folk dance 'Pooja Kunitha' and the satirical play 'Ghora Kaliyuga'.

The teams are qualified to take part in the South Asian level youth fest, Dr Barkur said.

The winners said that the competition was indeed tough. However, they could make it to the first prize with the guidance of Shivashankar Neenasam, their trainer. SDM College student Anwith, Govindadasa college student Vrinda and lecturer Ramesh Bhat were present at the press meet.
