Water supply to take a leap as works starts on Cauvery V Stage

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for the Cauvery V Stage project that aims to greatly augment water supply to Bengaluru.  

The Rs 5,550-crore project will bring in an additional  775 million litres of water to the city. The water will be pumped  in three stages: Thorekadanahalli (TK Halli), Harohalli and Tataguni.  The water from this project will be  supplied mainly to the 110 villages added to Bengaluru in 2007 and to improve the distribution in the city's core areas.  

Siddaramaiah also laid the foundation stone for an underground drainage network for 110 villages, that would include trunk sewers, sewage pumping stations and sewage treatment plants.  The  Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) is funding the project.

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has also included the construction of  seven ground-level reservoirs at Gottigere, Doddakannahalli, Kadugodi, Chokkanahalli, Vasudevapura, Singapura and Lingadevarahalli with a total capacity of 460 million litres and 14 sewage treatment plants with a total capacity of 129 million litres per day (MLD). The total cost of the project is Rs 3,087 crore with the JICA providing up to 85% of the funding.

The chief minister also inaugurated a 60  MLD sewage treatment plant in  Kengeri, the BWSSB's first plant with enhanced effluent discharge parameters. At this STP, the nutrient removal is part of the treatment process while environment-friendly effluents  are safely discharged into the Vrishabhavathi River.

'BJP misrule ruined Bengaluru'

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah slammed the BJP for its 'Save Bengaluru'  campaign. He said the previous BJP government's "misrule" had ruined the city. During his tenure as the Bengaluru in-charge minister, R Ashok  burnt 1,400 files, invited tenders at midnight and pledged BBMP buildings to raise loans. The BJP government was the worst regime that Karnataka  ever saw, Siddaramaiah added.
