A 20-year-old engineering student was found dead under mysterious circumstances on railway tracks near Kengeri on Friday night.

After preliminary inquiries, the railway police suspect that the student may have committed suicide by jumping in front of the train.

The deceased, Shanmugam Manjunath, was a third-year mechanical engineering student of the SJB Institute of Technology on Uttarahalli Main Road in Kengeri. A native of Proddatur in Kadappa, he was put up in the college hostel, the police said.

The city railway police were informed by a passer-by at around 10.50 pm on Friday night about a youth's body lying near the railway tracks between Kengeri and Nayandahalli. The police rushed to the spot and identified the body to be of Manjunath's. The police also learnt from the deceased's friends that he had attended the college that day and had stepped out of the hostel in the evening.

The police did not find a suicide note on him or in his hostel room.

Manjunath was an introvert and hardly mingled with any of his friends, one of his college mates told DH. A few of his friends also said that he suffered from health issues and also had financial problems in his family.

Manjunath's body was shifted to Victoria Hospital where the postmortem was conducted on Saturday and his body handed over to his family members. However, the city railway police have registered a case of death under suspicious circumstances and are investigating further.
