Basayya Math, a student of SKPU College in Muddebihal taluk, stood first in the PUC Arts stream scoring 93.83 per cent marks. Second of the three children of Basamma and Pakeeraiah of Bilebhavi, Basayya has all along felt the impact of poverty.

The family ekes out a meagre living from its two-acre farm.  Pakeeraiah, a resident of Bilebhavi has been suffering from nerve problems in a leg. But Basayya excelled in studies from the first standard.

Basayya’s illiterate parents do not even know the course in which their son is studying.  Basamma says: “He is learning because of his intelligence. I don’t know anything else than packing his tiffin box. As you all say he has scored good marks, he can study further. Although we are poor, we will try to continue his studies.”

Besides excelling in studies, Basayya is a talented singer, essay writer and participates in quiz programmes. Principal S P Patil says the college is proud of him as he has made it famous.

Basayya wants to appear for the Union Public Service Commission examinations after completing his degree and post graduation. For the not-so-famous SKPU College, it is double delight. Basayya’s classmate Baganna Madiwalappa Pujari, also of Bilebhavi was not far behind in achievement, scoring 90 per cent marks.
