CPM flays Cong, INLD for supporting khaps

"Caste panchayats are enjoying political patronage by the Congress and INLD of Om Prakash Chautala in Haryana and this is why they are trampling fundamental rights of citizens with impunity," CPM central committee member Nilotpal Basu told reporters.
They are doing this with an eye over the coming panchayat polls in the state, he added.
Basu, accompanied by Haryana CPM state secretary Inderjit Singh, demanded effective curb on "illegal activities" carried out under garb of panchayats in the state.

Basu, who is also in-charge of party affairs in Haryana, said "they (khaps) had managed to browbeat people with tacit support of the administration."He said his party would launch a state-wide movement against khaps in Haryana by making people aware through debates, lectures and seminars.The CPM leader welcomed the NHRC directive on khaps on Thursday warning these Caste councils against taking law in their hands in the name of tradition.
