Heavy rain in Dakshina Kannada, one killed

The deceased—identified as Vinyas(6)—was returning home with his parents after grazing cow when the mishap occurred.

Normal life was thrown out of gear in Udupi district on Tuesday with low-lying areas getting inundated and instances of increase in sea erosion being reported from the coastal belt.

In the last 24 hours, Udupi taluk received 127.6 mm rainfall followed by 103.4 mm in Kundapur and 89.2 mm in Karkala. Lack of proper drainage facilities aggravated citizens’ woes in many places.

Several trees were uprooted.  One house was damaged when a tree fell on it at Pandeshwara.  

With the Kalsanka drain overflowing, Gundibailu, Bannanje, Shiribeedu areas have been flooded.  

Three two-wheelers were damaged when a tree fell on them at Pethri. Low-lying areas of Navunda in Baindur were flooded and water entered many houses in Salubuda and residents have been shifted to safer places.  

Vehicle movement on the Udupi-Mangalore road was disrupted when a huge tree fell on NH 17 at Pangala in Katpady. Fishermen have been warned against venturing into sea in the next 48 hours.  The Bhatkal region received a record rainfall of 204.6 mm on Tuesday and paddy crop in thousands of acres has been submerged following heavy rain in the region for the last three days.    

Another house collapsed at Ekkarugudde in Surathkal hobli on Monday night. Two houses were partially damaged at Narimogru and Kodimbadi in Puttur. Low-lying areas have been inundated at Kodpadidota, Jeppinamogaru, Kodialbail, Snehanagara in Hosabettu.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, a resident of Snehanagara said the water on the road had already reached knee-level.  NH-48 was blocked for some time on Tuesday evening after the road developed a crack near Kodakkal in  Kannur. In the last 24 hours, Mangalore received the highest rainfall of 96.2 mm, followed by Bantwal 96 mm, Puttur—70.8 mm, Belthangady—69.1 mm and Sullia—64.2 mm.
