Central Govt includes more castes in OBC list

Last Updated 22 July 2010, 19:08 IST

An official release said the inclusion of castes belonging to Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Rajasthan and the Union Territory of Daman and Diu was based on the recommendation of the National Commission for Backward Classes.

The new additions will be made public after the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment issues a notification in this regard. Inclusion of these communities in the Central list of OBCs will enable them to avail of the benefits of reservation in Central Government services and posts as well as in Central education institutions, thus contributing to the goal of equity and inclusiveness, an official release said.

However, while the official release said castes relating to Karnataka were also approved, a section in the government said the cabinet wanted more information on some of these castes. The castes proposed by the NCBC were: Bathar, Bannad, Govadi, Govadi-Maratha, Godiga and Gawadiga.
