Rains damage property in DK, Udupi districts

Lightning claims one life in Moodbidre; roads flooded in City

The deceased has been identified as Janardhan Poojary (45), a resident of Ganadakotya in Karinje village near Moodbidri. He had gone outside to take bath when the incident occurred. His daughter, Jyoti (17), also suffered injuries in the incident.

In fact, the fire service personnel were engaged in rescue operation throughout the night in many parts of the City.

Three houses in Surathkal hobli and one house in Mulky hobli have been damaged in the rain, said Mangalore Revenue official.

The fire brigage personnel had to pump out water from low laying areas of Kottara Chowki and Kallapu, Guddekopla to carry out rescue operation. Water had entered houses in Attavar as well.

Owing to the half completed road work and lack of drains, water had entered several shops in Kottara Chowki. Houses in Acharya colony, Navagiri nagara, Soorinje, Guddekoppla and Doddakoppla were inundated.

A hillock caved in near the house of Basheer at Kuloor Raikatte.
The house of one Basheer was damaged when a tree fell on it near Canara Bank in Mulky.
The house of one Parvathy in K S Rao Nagara was damaged when lightning struck it in Mulky.

The house of one Jeevan Shetty in Angaragudde was also damaged. About 300 chicks were killed when lightning struk Shakti Poultry Farms in Kenchanakere.
Several telephone lines were disrupted. Several treess on Ullanje, Guthakadu too were uprooted.

MIT treatment plant bursts
Manipal: The treatment plant of MIT hostel burst open owing to the heavy rain that lashed the city  on Thursday night. As a result, the drainage water entered the open wells and houses at Arabbi area of 80-Badagabettu ward.
The treatment plant was set up some three to four months ago. The heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightening that lashed Manipal on Thursday night resulted in overflow of water. The treatment plant was damaged. The waste water along with rainwater gushed to the houses. As many as 15 to 20 houses have been affected.
Udupi-Chickmagalur MP D V Sadananda Gowda, Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon, 80-Badagabettu Gram Panchayat President Upendra Nayak visited the spot.
