The first General Elections commenced on September 10, 1951, with notifications under sections 15 and 17 of the Representation of the People Act issued in respect of Himachal Pradesh, and concluded on June 4, 1952, when the election to the West Bengal Legislative Council was completed. Thus the entire programme of the first General Elections took more than eight months to complete.
