The second general election in 1957 cost Rs 4.5 crore less than the previous one.
Credit goes to Chief Election Commissioner Sukumar Sen, who safely stored over 3.5 million ballot boxes from the 1952 polls, thereby considerably reducing the need for new ones.
Interestingly, in 1957, 3,000 fewer candidates entered the fray than in the first polls.
