WhatsApp, which is facing a lot of heat from users and tech critics over the revised, but flawed user privacy policy, is reportedly planning to add a new layer of security for chat backups online.
WhatsApp offers end-to-end encryption for chats between two private individuals. This means only the sender and the receiver will know the content of the message and the latter cannot be viewed by any other entity, not even WhatsApp or the government for surveillance purposes.
However, the chat history and multimedia content, which get stored on Google ( default option for Android) and iCloud (default option for iOS) or any other third-party online storage, can be accessed by a cybercriminal if the user's email account is compromised.
Now, WhatsApp is contemplating offering password protection for cloud storage and encryption of the chat backups, reported WABetaInfo citing the latest WhatsApp iOS beta version.
WhatsApp will offer password protection for both iOS and Android versions, but the new option will be made available in future updates. Currently, it is testing the aforementioned feature and once it weeds out bugs, the new update will be rolled out to the public in the coming weeks.
With this new feature, users will have more control over their private WhatsApp conversations stored in any of the registered cloud storage.
