A teen and his parents sustained serious burns when a leakage in a cooking gas cylinder triggered an explosion at south Delhi’s Safdarjung Enclave, police said on Wednesday.

Police said around 7.30 am in south Safdarjung Enclave’s Krishna Nagar, when Nura Sharma, 40, went to the kitchen to make tea for her husband M K Sharma, 45, and son Bhumnesh Sharma, 14, the cylinder caught fire due to the leakage, and later exploded.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that Nura got injured due to the explosion, and when her husband and son rushed to the kitchen, they too sustained burns and were trapped,” said a police officer.

Their neighbours broke in and managed to take them out after dousing the flames partly with water.

They immediately informed police and Delhi Fire Service.

“We immediately rushed two fire tenders to the spot. The blaze was doused in around 20 minutes, and they were rushed to Safdarjung Hospital,” a fire official said.

Nura is undergoing treatment. Doctors said she suffered 50 per cent burns, while her husband had 20 per cent and son 15 per cent.

Her condition is stable, doctors added.

Narrow escape

A driver of a chartered bus had a close shave when the vehicle caught fire at outer Delhi’s Narela on Tuesday night.

Seeing the bus engine in blaze, the driver alerted the passengers and jumped from the bus. The passengers too came out but in the process, two passengers received minor injuries.

Two fire tender vehicles reached the spot and doused the flames and the injured were rushed to nearby hospital where they are undergoing treatment for minor burns.
