3 killed in crane crash in Mumbai

In a New Year day tragedy, three contract workers of the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) were killed when the front portion of a massive crane crashed on them in Powai on Monday evening.

According to the corporation's Disaster Control Unit and Mumbai Police, the incident occurred around 6 pm when the labourers were digging a pit for a main sewerage line near the IIT-Bombay main gate. While the work was under way, the front portion of the crane fell on the unsuspecting labourers.

"The victims got crushed under the heavy bucket of the JCB crane machine. They were rushed to the nearby Rajawadi hospital where three of them were declared brought dead, while two others are being treated," PTI quoted an official as saying.

The deceased were identified as Rameshwar Heramsingh (45), Satyanarayan Singh (40), and Vishwanath Singh (32). The injured were identified as Pareshnath Singh (49) and Ramnath Singh (48).
