Four persons were arrested in Hauz Khas for cheating people on the pretext of settling their default payment of loans taken from Royal Bank of Scotland, police said on Wednesday.
Vishal Pawar, 31, Ajit Singh, 26, Subhash Sharma, 25 and Kamal Kumar, 28 were arrested for posing as authorised collection agents of the bank, said Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south).
“We got information that some fraudsters will be coming to Subhara Goel’s house in Hauz Khas to collect payment for settling her personal loan at the bank,” she added.
A trap was laid at the Hauz Khas house, along with authorised representatives of the Royal Bank of Scotland, and Vishal, Ajit and Subhash were arrested. Police also recovered fake receipt books and papers containing confidential data regarding various loan clients of the bank from their possession.
The trio told police during sustained interrogation that they had cheated several people by adopting the same modus operandi.
“They used to procure the details of loan and installments of bank customers and then approach some customers to settle their default payments of loan or payment of installments,” Sharma said.
At the instance of the trio, their associate Kamal Kumar was also arrested from his house in Jangpura.
During investigation, it was found that Subhash used to work with Incredible Management Services, which is associated with the RBS for collection of installments of personal loans availed by its customers.
“The gang had exposure to banking practices because of their work experience with a collection management agency and used it to convince customers that they were paying their hard-earned moneys into safe hands,” Sharma said.
The police have so far identified six such incidents related to the RBS, involving lakhs of rupees.
“The details of other banks which might have been targeted by these cheats and the trail of moneys siphoned off from other victims are yet to be established.
The role of bank officials is also under probe and more recoveries and arrests are likely to be effected in the case,” she added.
House burgled
Burglars struck at a house of Indian Revenue Services officer posted at the Ministry of Finance in Sarojini Nagar area of south Delhi on Wednesday and made with cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, police said.
The burglary was reported from the house of Ruchira Pant in Sarojini Nagar at around 7.30 pm.
“Ruchira, had left for her office in the morning after locking her house. When she returned in the evening, she noticed that someone had broken into the house,” said police.
She found that her house had been burgled and jewellery — gold chains, rings and some silver items — worth lakhs of rupees were missing.
“The forensic team has taken fingerprints from the spot and we are investigation the case. We will get a clear picture soon,” police added.
