Burglars struck at the house of a 64-year-old businessman at Nabi Karim in central Delhi and fled with cash and jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, police said on Monday.

Ashwini Kumar Malhotra, who runs a garment business, told police that he and his family were away at Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh for a holiday when the incident happened. Police said the burglars struck between Saturday afternoon and Sunday evening.

“They left their Singhara Chowk house at 3.30 pm on Saturday. When they returned at 11 pm the next day, they were shocked to see the locks of the main door broken and the whole house ransacked,” the official said.

Ashwini said the burglars had looted diamond, gold and silver jewelleries such as rings, bangles and nose pins. Some silver utensils, a laptop and a camera were also missing.

“We suspect the hand of persons known to the victim as it seems the robbers knew the house well. We have started investigation with a team of fingerprint experts,” the official said.

Police have also statements of Ashwini’s neighbours and asked him to give details of his domestic help and other employees.

A case has been filed against unknown persons with Nabi Karim police station on charges of house-breaking and theft under sections 457 and 380 of the Indian Penal Code.
