An Indian Air Force corporal’s family has alleged that he was killed by his wife in March by giving him aluminium phosphate.

The family claimed that no action has been initiated against the woman by police despite complaints filed in March and April. On Wednesday, police filed an FIR, but the charges are of abetment of suicide.

On March 22, Pawan Kumar was admitted to Base Hospital in south west Delhi’s Dhaula Kuan after he felt uneasy. The 27-year-old was treated in the emergency and ICU wards before he passed away on March 23.

“The doctors had found in the post-mortem that Pawan died after consuming aluminium phosphate tablets,” Pawan’s father Jai Prakash told Deccan Herald.

Pawan, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district, lived with wife Seema and two children in the Indian Air Force staff quarters in south west Delhi’s Palam.

He had joined the Indian Air Force as an aircraftsman in July 2003 and married Seema in November 2007. But, the couple had been facing marital discord and Seema had even filed for divorce in Dwarka court last year.

“Seema and her family members were just interested in Pawan’s income and our family’s income from property business in Noida. Pawan had told me on numerous occasions that Seema and her family members had borrowed at least Rs 14 lakh from him,” Prakash added.

It is alleged that the couple frequently argued over the borrowed money. “Pawan had been demanding return of money, but Seema and her family never returned any money. The issues had also led to Seema’s father and brother asking her to cut her ties with Pawan,” Prakash said.

He further claims that Seema’s family is now threatening him and his family members against approaching police.

On Wednesday, a case under section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the Indian Penal Code was registered with Delhi Cantonment police station. In their defence, police claim that Pawan was depressed with the way his married life was unstable and had suicidal tendency. Pawan had also told his family members that he would commit suicide if their marital discord continued.
