The All India Students’ Association (AISA) is leading the count of votes in three out of four posts in the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union elections that were held on Friday, according to student leaders.
The results are expected to be announced on Sunday.
According to Abhay Kumar, a member of Concerned Students, AISA was leading the count for the posts of president, vice-president and general secretary in the central panel elections on Saturday night. For the post of general secretary, the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), the rebel faction of the Students' Federation of India (SFI).
Zico Dasgupta, a member of DSF, confirmed the trend. He further said results had come in for the council elections held at School of International Studies and School of Social Sciences and counting was on for the rest.
“At School of International Studies, AISA has won four out of the five seats. One seat was bagged by All India Students’ Federation,” he said.
At School of Social Sciences, AISA again bagged four seats while DSF managed to win one seat, he added.
According to a member of National Students Union of India, the counting has been slow and they are hoping the results of the central panel elections will be announced be Sunday afternoon.
An estimated 56 per cent turnout was recorded at JNU on Friday, a five per cent drop from last year.
There are eight candidates contesting for the post of president, five for vice-president, six for general secretary and three for joint secretary of JNUSU.
Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (MCM) was the common agenda for all the contesting students unions.
This year saw an interesting mix of students contesting the polls. Among others, it had a gay student, a foreign national and a single mother who tried to woo the students voters with her child.
