Punjab National Bank managing director Sunil Mehta and executive director K V Brahmaji Rao on Saturday faced CBI investigators in connection with the Rs 11,394.02 crore fraud by business groups involved in diamond trade.

CBI sources said the top officials were quizzed but investigators were not treating them as accused. They were called to figure out how the banking system was working in PNB from where companies run by diamontaire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi managed to get Letters of Understanding fraudulently.

Investigators asked these officials how the fraud was detected by the bank. They also sought to understand how it went undetected and the measures taken by the bank after the detection of the fraud.
