Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday demanded a judicial authority to safeguard the constitutional rights of 40 lakh people left out of the National Register of Citizens in Assam.

Speaking on the issue in Lok Sabha, Gogoi, who is from Assam, criticised the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in the State for adopting a “weak, casual and ineffective approach” to updating the NRC. He said even after spending about Rs 1,200 crore, the government was unable to make public the number of illegal migrants in Assam.

Gogoi referred to Home Minister Rajnath Singh's statement that people left out of NRC had been given another chance to prove their citizenship and said it only meant that the Union government was not sure of the number of illegal migrants.
