Congress nominee from Saharanpur Lok Sabha seat Imran Masood allegedly threatened to kill BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
Speaking at an election meeting in Saharanpur on Thursday, Masood reportedly said that he will “chop Modi to pieces”.
A case was registered against Masood after a video containing the speech went viral on the web. “We have registered a case of inciting passion and hatred and we are investigating the matter,” officials said.
Masood, however, later apologised after his remarks came in for sharp criticism by almost every political party. “I should not have said so... some decorum must be maintained in politics... I apologise, he said.
Meanwhile, an embarrassed Congress on Friday sought explanation from Masood for his comments. The party central leadership has also asked him to make his stand clear to the media. “The Congress party abjures violence whether of language or otherwise. We are determined to fight the BJP as also Narendra Modi politically in order to protect the idea of India,” AICC spokesman Randeep Surjewala said here.
Pushed to the defensive, the Congress party recalled that Rahul Gandhi had asked partymen to refrain from making objectionable remarks even against their worst critics.
