University of Mysore (UoM) in-charge Vice-Chancellor C Basavaraju said on Monday that unless we have competent and qualified teachers, it is impossible to improve the quality of education.
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a three-day seminar on the theme ‘Teachers in the current scenario of school education’ organised by Department of Education, University of Mysore, in association with Azim Premji University, at Vijnana Bhavan, here, he said, only 10 out of 100 teachers are competent.
“Unless and until we recruit quality and competent teachers with the potential and good knowledge, it is impossible to improve the system of education in the country,” the VC said.
Basavaraju said that more than qualified teachers, there was a need for more competent teachers and even the process of appointment must be based on their competency. An incompetent teacher not only damages the institution but also the country and society in particular, he said.
The quality of education can be improved by laying more emphasis on classroom teaching. Besides, it is necessary to impart education with human and moral values.
The teachers training institute must inculcate and train the teachers to prepare students, who are the future of the nation.
Assistant Director, School of Education, Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, Rajashree Srinivasan said, technology cannot replace teachers as they have to deal with human beings and not machines. But, the teachers must make use of technology to update their knowledge, she suggested.
The seminar is aimed at encouraging academic discourse and writing in Kannada on relevant educational issues.
The seminar also aims to fill up the crucial gap of quality resource material in Kannada to give an opportunity to create a common platform for all people working in education to come together and engage in purposeful dialogue.
Regional Institute of Education, Mysuru Principal Y Sreekanth, Department of Studies Education and UoM Syndicate member Ningamma C Betsur and others were present.
