Raising questions about Congress MP and Thiruvananthapuram candidate Shashi Tharoor’s innocence in the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, CPM veteran V S Achuthanandan on Wednesday sought an explanation from the Union government as to why a case was not registered against the Union minister.

In a statement released here, the Leader of the Opposition pointed out that no case was registered against Tharoor, though doctors termed Sunanda’s death unnatural. The CPM leader sought an explanation from top leaders of the Congress, including Defence Minister A K Antony.

Achuthanandan’s statement came on a day when CPM state committee member M Vijayakumar received notice from the Election Commission over his slanderous remarks against Tharoor on Tuesday.

The state Congress leaders – including Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president V M Sudheeran – responded to the Left’s barrage of charges and slammed the attacks against Tharoor.

Meanwhile, CPM leader and former minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said that Tharoor should have stayed away from the Lok Sabha elections, considering the controversies surrounding his personal life.
