Members of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association have alleged that the DU administration is not allowing them to put up tents for an indefinite hunger strike starting on Wednesday.
“We sent notices to the vice chancellor and the Delhi Police 10 days ago, informing them about the indefinite hunger strike. But when we reached the venue, the truck carrying the tents was not allowed inside the venue,” said DUTA president Amar Deo Sharma. “The security guard told us that they got orders not to allow putting up tents,” said Sharma.
Teachers were planning to start the strike in DU’s main building. The same venue was also chosen during DUTA’s one-day strike in August.
“This is unethical. The VC is acting like as if it is his own property. Teachers have the right to protest,” added Sharma.
DUTA members said a retaliation of this sort was expected. “The strike will start on Wednesday wherever we get a place for it,” said Sharma. DUTA decided to start an indefinite hunger strike, demanding the VC to have a dialogue with the teaching community over academic changes and decisions being taken place in the varsity without discussions with the teaching body. Despite attempts to reach DU proctor Usha Rao, there was no response.
