A Delhi court Friday awarded death sentences to five members of a family convicted for the honour killing of a young couple in 2010, saying their offence was the rarest of the rare.

Asha, 19, was beaten and then electrocuted along with her 20-year-old boyfriend Yogesh. The girl’s family reportedly did not want them to marry because the boy was from a lower caste.

The order was passed by additional sessions Judge Ramesh Kumar Singhal against parents of the girl Suraj and Maya, uncle Om Prakash, aunt Khusboo and brother Sanjeev. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on each of them.

“The offence was committed in a very brutal manner. The savage nature of the crime has shocked the judicial conscience,” the judge said.

The court also observed that the crime was committed in cold blood and was pre-planned.
“Both the victims had not done anything to provoke the convict. They were inhumanly electrocuted,” the court said.
