In a first of its kind endeavour, the South Corporation has decided to collect waste from people’s doorsteps and dump it directly at landfill sites to do away with the dependence on overflowing dhalaos (streetside dumps).
When MCD vehicles collect waste from the dhalaos, a lot of it gets scattered outside the dumps and keep lying there.
“In order to tackle this problem we have decided to dump the waste collected from the household directly at landfill sites,” said Manish Gupta, Commissioner of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation.
Segregation of kitchen waste from recyclable waste at the source (a household) and vehicle to vehicle transfer of garbage are the highlights of the newly proposed scheme.
GPS enabled vehicles
“The corporation will provide GPS enabled vehicles under this scheme. Their routes will be notified as well so that we can keep tabs on them,” said Gupta.
A senior official with Department of Environment Management Services with South Delhi Municipal Corporation said that concessionaires do not take the work of cleanliness seriously as the contract of some of them has been expired.
According to the South Corporation, the tendering process has been initiated and six bidders have been shortlisted.
“Even the lowest bidder has been finalised. We will start issuing the contract by this year-end,” added Gupta.
Under the new scheme, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation will engage four private player for each of its zones.
At present, the civic agency has two concessionaires – one operates in Central and South Zones, and the other looks after the West Zone.
The South Corporation is responsible for dumping garbage from Najafgarh Zone at landfill sites.
Private players are engaged by the civic agencies which employ waste pickers to collect garbage from people’s home and dump it at the dhalaos.
The corporations’ vehicles then pick up the garbage from the dhalaos and take it to the landfill sites – Bhalaswa, Okhla, Ghazipur and Narela-Bawana waste-to-energy plant.
