A 25-year-old murder accused lodged in a lock-up attempted to kill himself by slitting his throat at outer Delhi’s Aman Vihar police station on Monday afternoon.

He was taken in a critical condition to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital from where he was referred to Safdarjung Hospital, the police said.

Anil had several cases against him. “A few days ago, he was granted bail in a rape case under section 376 of the IPC and on the same day, that is on the night of Diwali, he killed a man named Ghanshyam with a country-made pistol in Aman Vihar area. So he was arrested and kept in the lock-up,” said a police officer.

“He was later presented in court. The court ordered his remand and he was kept in the lock-up. He was supposed to appear before the court on Monday. But when we went to his cell, we found him grievously injured,” he added.

According to the police, blood was flowing from his neck. He underwent an operation at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital which lasted nearly three to four hours. The doctors then referred him to Safdarjung Hospital. It is suspected that Anil broke one of the tiles in the lock-up and used it to slit his throat.
