ICC World Cup BAN vs AFG Highlights: Bangladesh pull off comprehensive win against fellow AsiansMushfiqur Rahim lead the way with the bat while Shakib did so with the ball

Last Updated IST

Bangla Tigers steamroll Afghanistan

So Afghanistan crumble in a chase yet again, though this one was much more comprehensive for them. It was a difficult wicket to bat on, with the ball not coming, and with three spinners in the opposing side, and two pacers who are essentially masters at bowling cutters, it was always going to be an uphill task to chase anything about 200-230. Bangladesh put up 262.

The openers started decently for Afghanistan, with Rahmat Shah being the aggressor while Gulbadin Naib hung around. The former fell to Shakib and then Hashmatullah Shahidi also walked after a painful innings. Shakib then got rid of the skipper Naib and the experienced Nabi in the same over, effectively derailing the chase. He picked Asghar Afghan also for good measure.

Shinwari and Najibullah put on a counter-attacking 50-run stand but the top order had taken so much time to accumulate the runs that they were left with too much to do. The latter was Shakib's fifth victim as he tried to attack and the tail was cleaned up pretty easily by the rest of the bowlers. So Bangladesh live on in the tournament, but are just about clinging on to some dear hopes of making the final four.

46.2 Saifuddin to Shinwari, DOT, drives this yorker to long on and refuses the single

46.5 Saifuddin to Mujeeb, DOT, full on the stumps, driven to short extra cover

46.6 Saifuddin to Mujeeb, OUT, consecutive ducks for Mujeeb. And he is out bowled out in both matches. Full pace length delivery on the stumps, he swings wildly, it was always crashing into the stumps once he decided to do that. Leaves Shinwari stranded on 49 too

Afg win toss; to bowl first

Gulbadin Naib calls right and he will bowl first. The conditions are suitable for bowling, and they know the conditions since they have played at the ground just a couple of days back.

Mortaza would have wanted to bat first anyway, he says. Saifuddin and Mosaddek are back in the side for Rubel Hossain and Sabbir Rahman

Toss delayed due to rain

So these are the words from the Cricket World Cup's official website:

"It is currently raining in Southampton and the covers are protecting the hallowed turf. We hope it's just a shower, as it's not a heavy downpour, but we keep our fingers crossed."

Bangla Tigers push for top four berth

While Bangladesh can still have a sniff of making the semi-finals, Afghanistan harbour no such hopes. Asia's newest entrant to World Cups have lost all six of their matches so far and are out of contention, which means they play today's game with nothing to lose. Their brand of cricket is usually engaging, it has the capacity to wow you but their inexperience at the top level also shows up simultaneously.

Bangladesh spent a lot of time in Afghanistan's shoes, perennially being known asthe minnows, but they shed that tag. The team have played like any top team would, breezing past opponents like South Africa and West Indies, while showing the stomach for a fight against England and Australia. They are a well-oiled machine and with someone like Shakib Al Hasan in top form, should be more than capable of defeating Afghanistan.
