Australia steamroll the hosts

That was a comprehensive victory for the Kangaroos in the end. A score of 287 seemed inadequate especially with the start Finch and Warner got, but England's recent batting woes meant that it was enough by a margin of 65 runs. They have collapsed twice in two chases and have a lot of pondering to do.

The match was effectively lost in the first six overs, when Vince, Root and Morgan followed each other to the pavilion. Bairstow hung around for a while before gifting his wicket, which brought his fellow keeper, Buttler to the crease. Him and Stokes counter attacked well, as is their nature and put on a 50-run stand to raise hopes for the hosts.

Buttler then holed out to a poor shot and Stokes was joined by Woakes to put in some more resistance. But that was ended by Starc when he bowled a searing yorker to get rid of Stokes, who had just started attacking the bowlers. That knocked the wind out of England's already waylaid boat, and to rub salt into the wounds, Woakes was caught in the deep by some nice tag team work between best friends, Maxwell and Finch.

It was then about cleaning up the tail which Behrendorff and Starc did with aplomb, the former also helping himself to a five-wicket haul in the process. He got it at the best place possible, and will cherish it for a long time to come.

It was a pleasure to get you the live updates from this big clash. Do join us tomorrow for New Zealand vs Pakistan, where it is a do or die game for the latter. See you then!

44.3 Starc to Rashid, DOT, cutter on leg, goes past the attempted guide to third man

41.2 Behrendorff to Rashid, 1 run, taps this length ball to point for one

41.3 Behrendorff to Woakes, OUT, excellent, that is stellar work! Chris goes for the slog sweep, it is the super long boundary, got it very high in the air, Maxi at deep mid wicket catches it, his momentum takes him over the ropes, but he easily parries it to his skipper who is there to support him in case he needs it. And he did.

Woakes c Finch b Behrendorff 26(34)

Jofra Archer walks in at no.10

Aus 184/6 (39 overs)

Moeen Ali in at no.8 and his batting has not inspired confidence for quite some time. After that dismissal, Stokes threw his bat on the ground and kicked it away in disgust. Aus 177/6 (37 overs)

36.6 Starc to Stokes, OUT, that might be the game for Australia! Stokes misses his century but this was a special ball. Starc bowled it full, it tailed back in through the air, too good even for a well set Stokes, goes under his bat and rattles the off pole. End of an excellent fighting innings

29.2 Stoinis to Stokes, DOT, slower one bowled full, driven back to Marcus

128/5 (29 overs)

29.6 Maxwell to Stokes, 1 run.

124/5 (27.2 overs)

27.2 Stoinis to Buttler, OUT, what have you done, Jos? This was not all that short, he went for the pull, usually goes full tilt did not do so on this occasion, deep sqaure leg ran to his right, was mindful of the ropes, caught it well and held his balance too

Buttler c Khawaja b Stoinis 25(27)

Eng 122/4 (27 overs)

Stokes seems to be struggling a bit, not sure if it is the hamstring or the calf. He is hobbling for his runs and him injured will be the last thing England would want. He gets some massages on his calf, so that is the problem area

26.1 Lyon to Stokes, 1 run, punched to long off

26.2 Lyon to Buttler, DOT, down the track and wears it on the pad

26.3 Lyon to Buttler, 2 runs, short and spinning in, cut away to deep backward point

Eng 102/4 (23 overs)

Lyon is back.

22.1 Lyon to Stokes, DOT, length on off, punched back

21.1 Stoinis to Buttler, DOT, length outside off, it is the slower ball too, defended with a straight bat

21.2 Stoinis to Buttler, 1 leg byes, walks down the track, wears it on the pad, there is an appeal from the bowler and Finch goes for the DRS with a second left! Seems a poor review, he was way down the track Jos. Impact is way outside off and that is a wasted review

21.3 Stoinis to Stokes, 1 leg byes, full on leg, Jos called him through and makes it in with a dive. Short mid wicket swooped in quickly and just misses the stumps. Buttler was walking if it had hit

21.4 Stoinis to Buttler, 1 run, walks down and hits this firmly to deep mid wicket

21.5 Stoinis to Stokes, DOT, much straighter on the stumps, defended back

21.6 Stoinis to Stokes, 1 run.

Change of bowling and it is Marcus Stoinis

19.2 Stoinis to Stokes, DOT, there was some noise as it passed the bat there. Carey appealed but no one else was interested

19.3 Stoinis to Stokes, FOUR, another one! Comes down again, takes it on the half volley and powers it wide of long on for a boundary

19.4 Stoinis to Stokes, 1 run, slower ball on leg, turned away to deep square leg

Eng 53/4 (13.5 overs)

13.4 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, length outside off, it came in a little off the pitch, Jonny leaves it alone

13.5 Behrendorff to Bairstow, OUT, gone! After starting to build some momentum England, Jonny gifts his wicket. This is short, he goes for the pull, did not go full bloodied on it, and it is the longer boundary so he had to really. Deep mid wicket is in play and it is an easy catch for him

Bairstow c Cummins b Behrendorff 27(39)

Eng 52/3 (13 overs)

9.2 Cummins to Bairstow, DOT, length ball again, coming in a bit, defended to the leg side

9.3 Cummins to Bairstow, DOT, little fuller than a good length, gets a slight inside edge which falls near his feet Jonny

9.4 Cummins to Bairstow, FOUR, good shot! Length into the body this time, it is an easy flick for Jonny, and he does so through mid wicket for another boundary

9.5 Cummins to Bairstow, DOT, similar ball but there is mid wicket in place this time

9.6 Cummins to Bairstow, DOT.

Eng 35/3 (9 overs)

8.1 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, length on off, Jonny wants to punch, does not pull it off

8.2 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, this is poor from Jonny. Bowled full and wide of off, he wanted to drive, the inswing beats the inside edge

8.3 Behrendorff to Bairstow, FOUR, this is more convincing. Slightly back of a length this one, angled across because of the left armer's action, Jonny short arm punches this past extra cover

8.5 Behrendorff to Stokes, DOT, much straighter, outside off, just catches the toe end of Ben's bat to roll towards point

6.5 Behrendorff to Bairstow, FOUR, he is going to attack by the looks of it. This one is on a length outside off,and it is lofted over mid off, just about runs away to the ropes

6.6 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT.

Eng 26/3 (5.5 overs)

5.1 Starc to Bairstow, DOT.

5.2 Starc to Bairstow, FOUR, glorious! Full and wide, he takes a step to his right to get to the pitch and square drives it beautifully past covers for four

5.3 Starc to Bairstow, DOT, lets this length ball go by

5.4 Starc to Bairstow, 1 run, full and tailing back in, Jonny was ready for it, turns it away to mid wicket

5.5 Starc to Morgan, OUT, the skipper goes now. This is horrible batting by Eoin. Starc goes short, knows he will hook it by instinct, he does indeed but the pace on it is too much, he gets a top edge that is gobbled up by fine leg

Morgan c Cummins b Starc 4(7)

Eng 21/2 (5 overs)

Eoin Morgan in at no.4 and he is in way earlier than he would have wanted to.

4.1 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, fuller length, angled across Jonny, he shoulders arms. He has to be really cautious and I think he realizes that. His captain will hope so too

4.2 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, length again angled across, comes forward to defend, gets a slight inside edge, and is safe as it does not roll on to the stumps

4.3 Behrendorff to Bairstow, 1 leg byes, starts on leg stump, hits Jonny on the pad but is comfortably down leg

4.4 Behrendorff to Morgan, WIDE, that is not the right line, goes down leg

4.4 Behrendorff to Morgan, DOT, this is full and wide of off, Eoin chops the drive

4.5 Behrendorff to Morgan, FOUR, that is an aggressive approach! Eoin comes down the track, takes it on the half volley and hits it straight down the ground for his first boundary

4.6 Behrendorff to Morgan, DOT.

Eng 15/2 (3.3 overs)

3.1 Starc to Root, DOT, that swung in late, Joe wanted to drive this length ball, it comes in and beats the inside edge. He picked the length late there

3.2 Starc to Root, DOT, another one coming in after pitching outside off, this time he is full forward but gets an inside edge onto pad and then rolls to short cover

3.3 Starc to Root, OUT, the big wicket now! No DRS from Root, he knows he is dead. This one pitched on off and came back in, too much pace on that even for Root, he looks to flick, his head falls over and that is as plumb as it could get. My word, Australia are roaring back into the game

Root lbw b Starc 8(9)

Absolutely!

Eng 15/1 (3 overs)

2.1 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, length ball angled across, misses Jonny's bat which is hung out to dry

2.4 Behrendorff to Bairstow, FOUR, good shot! Straying on the pads a bit Jason, inswing from middle, Jonny punches it away past mid wicket for a boundary

2.5 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT, better line and length, a bit fuller outside off, angled across, defended solidly on the front foot

2.6 Behrendorff to Bairstow, DOT.

Eng 11/1 (2 overs)

Mitchell Starc from the other end.

1.1 Starc to Bairstow, DOT, good leave! Starts off with an inswinger on a length, Jonny is way forward and shoulders arms

1.2 Starc to Bairstow, DOT, goes full this time, wide of off, and that is a much easier leave

1.3 Starc to Bairstow, 2 runs, good shot that. This was full, wide of off too, punched on the front foot past point and takes two

1.4 Starc to Bairstow, 1 run, thrown wide of off again, enticing the drive, Jonny obliges and gets a thick outside edge to third man

1.5 Starc to Root, FOUR, easily glanced away! That is an inswinger again but it is a wrong line, starts on leg and moves in, and it goes into the fine leg fence

1.6 Starc to Root, DOT.

Eng 4/1 (1 over)

Joe Root in super early at no.3

0.3 Behrendorff to Root, DOT, wide of off, lets it go

0.4 Behrendorff to Root, DOT, punched to backward point

0.5 Behrendorff to Root, DOT, another one wide of off, easy leave that

0.6 Behrendorff to Root, FOUR, short and wide, Joe is in supreme form, cuts it away past Maxi at backward point and that takes some doing

Eng 0/1 (0.2 overs)

Jason Behrendorff will be the man to start things off for Australia and James Vince will be the one to face him.

0.1 Behrendorff to Vince, DOT, starts off full, coming in through the air, driven to silly mid on

0.2 Behrendorff to Vince, OUT, wow what a delivery! The perfect start for Australia and Vince is walking. Jason steams in, and bowls it full, it tails in through the air and rattles the stumps after going past the defences.

Vince bBehrendorff 0(2)

Bairstow and Vince walk out to the middle and they will want a good start here. The former fell for a golden duck last time out and will hope to change that today. Vince has got to fire and this will be a good game to do that. Starc and Cummins will be on the money right from the start, with the target not as intimidating as initially hoped. We are in for an interesting time here

Aus 285/7 (50 overs)

Last over and it will be Ben Stokes to bowl

49.1 Stokes to Starc, DOT, length on leg stump, wants to tuck it away, wears it on the pad

2.2 Woakes to Warner, DOT, length again, on the stumps this time, defended on the back foot

2.3 Woakes to Warner, DOT, oh close! This moves away off the pitch, some lateral movement, starts on off and moves away, Dave has a poke at it, lucky to not edge it

2.4 Woakes to Warner, DOT, judges the swing well, it is on a length wide of off, easily let go

2.5 Woakes to Warner, DOT, tentative again. This one is on off, came in a little, he was in two minds to play or leave, it takes the face of the bat and dies down on the way to the slips

2.6 Woakes to Warner, 2runs.

Aus 11/0 (2 overs)

Here's Archer!

1.1 Archer to Finch, FOUR, what a welcome! This was full and wide of off, looking for out swing, Finch strides forward and drives beautifully past the covers. Did not give it any chance to swing

1.2 Archer to Finch, DOT, much straighter on off stump, length too, defended down the pitch with a straight bat

1.3 Archer to Finch, DOT, short and wide, he wants to cut/punch, mistimes it down the ground

1.4 Archer to Finch, DOT, that was the incoming delivery! Length on off, came in to Finch, caught him on the thigh, too high though

1.5 Archer to Finch, DOT, length of off this time, he gets his bat close to the pad to defend

1.6 Archer to Finch, DOT.

Aus 7/0 (1 over)

Finch and Warner stride out to the crease and they have been in blazing form off late. Warner looked his old self against Bangladesh, and Finch has been uber consistent. Both have got 150+ scores already at the WC and they will look to bat deep again. Can England stop them? Let's find out. Woakes with the new ball for England.

Some boos already for Warner as his name is called out by the announcer!

0.1 Woakes to Finch, DOT, back of a length to start, nipping in a little, defended on the jump

0.2 Woakes to Finch, FOUR, first runs! Streaky though. That was a great delivery, length wide of off, Finch drives hard, it takes the outside edge and flies over second slip

0.3 Woakes to Finch, 2 leg byes, length ball coming back too much, it goes off the pads, there is an appeal, but it is going down leg

0.4 Woakes to Finch, 1 run, length outside off, smartly punched to extra cover

0.5 Woakes to Warner, DOT, another good ball! Length ball angled across Dave, it moves away off the pitch and past his bat

0.6 Woakes to Warner, DOT.

Time for national anthems

Australia's anthem is played first, followed by that of England at the iconic Lord's ground. The perfect venue for a big game!

Team News

Australia XI: David Warner, Aaron Finch(c), Usman Khawaja, Steven Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey(wk), Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Jason Behrendorff

England XI: James Vince, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan(c), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(wk), Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood

Eng win toss; to bowl first

Finch calls it wrong and Morgan wants to bowl first. Not only because of the overcast conditions, he feels the pitch is a little soft too. No changes for England from their last XI.

Finch was unsure about what to do if he won the toss, may have had a bowl too, but he does not mind batting. Two changes for Australia- Behrendorff and Lyon are in for Coulter-Nile and Zampa. The English crowd will not pose a problem for Smith and Warner, he says, they do not care about it.

An update on Archer

There are no favourites in today's game

England vs Australia is cricket's oldest rivalry and today's match-up is arguably bigger than the Indo-Pak clash. While that game was big because of mostly non-cricketing reasons, today's game is a complete contrast. It is going to be a clash of two teams with not much to choose between them in terms of skills.

You cannot really pick the better side, even though England lost their game against Sri Lanka. If anything, that loss will spur them on even more, and that might spill over on the Aussies. The Kangaroos have no major hiccups to speak of, with everything seeming well and good for them, their last loss coming against India.

For England, Jofra Archer may be a doubt for the game after he did not train yesterday complaining of a side strain, while Australia have no injury worries, as Stoinis returned to the line-up in the last. Today has all the makings of a thriller, let us hope it lives up to that.
